David Jeffries scoops the dedication to Epsom award at a glittering ceremony

David Jeffries, was the star of the night on Saturday (27th November) as he collected his Dedication to Racing in Epsom trophy at a glittering Owners’ and Trainers’ awards ceremony held at Epsom Downs racecourse.

David arrived in Epsom in 1974, following a five year stint in Newmarket, and has remained there ever since. He has dedicated his working life to racing in Epsom and it was wonderful to see that work recognised in front of many of David’s colleagues and friends.

The ROA Epsom Owners’ & Trainers’ Awards are Back for 2021

Next Saturday, 27th November, will see the return of the Epsom Owners’ & Trainers’ Awards to the Racing Welfare in-person events calendar having been lost to the pandemic in 2020. The glittering black-tie event, which is sponsored by the ROA and held at Epsom Downs racecourse, will once again be hosted by Sky Sports Racing presenter Hayley Moore.

The awards will celebrate the achievements of Epsom’s racing community throughout the year and are made up of both points-based awards and those judged by a panel. In charge of deciding on the award winners this year were Andrew Cooper, Head of Racing and Clerk of the Course at Epsom Downs and Sandown Park; Howard Wright, former Associate Editor of the Racing Post; esteemed sports presenter Rishi Persad and new to the panel this year, Sadie Evans from our headline sponsor Racehorse Owners Association.  

Epsom Open Day returns to showcase Surrey’s historic racing centre

This year’s Epsom Open Day will see seven racing yards within this historic training centre throw their gates open to the public on Sunday 12th September, to tie in with Epsom Heritage Week and the launch of the first-ever National Racehorse Week (12-19 September).

Organised by Racing Welfare and sponsored by The Jockey Club, Epsom Open Day will give racing fans and locals the opportunity to see behind-the-scenes of some of the top racing yards of Epsom, and meet some of their superhero horses, trainers and stable staff. Stable tours will take place between 9am and 1pm, with a bus service rotating on stops every 15 minutes between the participating yards. There will also be an opportunity to see some of the horses being worked on the iconic Epsom gallops, alongside sports broadcaster Rishi Persad who has just returned home having covered the equestrian sport at the Tokyo Olympics.

The Racehorse Owners Association (ROA) has been confirmed as headline sponsor of Racing Welfare’s Virtual Epsom Open Day on Bank Holiday Monday 31st August. The free to access online event has been created in replacement of the usual Epsom Open Day and race meeting on the August Bank Holiday, which has been cancelled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Peace Prevails scoops Horse of the Year at Epsom Owners and Trainers Awards

The Jim Boyle-trained Peace Prevails was last night named as the Moss Electrical Epsom Horse of the Year at the 21st running of the glittering Owners and Trainers Awards at Epsom Downs racecourse, organised by Racing Welfare.   Owned by Epsom Equine Spa Partnerships and Mark Aljoe, the 4yo filly is sitting on a 42% strike rate for the season, notching up three wins from seven runs this year.  The win marked a double on the night for Jim Boyle, whose Inside Track Racing Club-owned Hataya took to the award in the four year old and over category – Best Older Horse – sponsored by the Racehorse Owners Association.

Sunny Epsom Open Day draws in the crowds

Visitors flocked to Epsom on a sun-drenched Bank Holiday Monday yesterday (26th August), descending on the training centre to enjoy looking around the yards of seven trainers based in town.  Organised by Racing Welfare, the morning saw a strong crowd of families and racing fans gather at Epsom’s gallops from 8.30am, where ITV Racing’s Rishi Persad interviewed the local trainers as their strings cruised up past an enthusiastic audience.

Hayley Moore announced as new Racing Welfare Ambassador

Racing Welfare has great pleasure in announcing that Hayley Moore has joined our team of Ambassadors.  Hayley’s first assignment will be to hosting the Epsom Owners’ and Trainers’ Awards at Epsom Downs Racecourse this weekend on behalf of the charity.

At the Races presenter Hayley Moore has joined Racing Welfare’s team of Ambassadors, a role which will see her help to raise the profile of the charity in various ways.  She joins a roster that counts Paul Nicholls, Lee Mottershead, Becky Smith, Darren ‘Birdie’ Bird, Sam Twiston-Davies and her brother Ryan Moore amidst its ranks.
