Simon Bailey’s Blog – World Mental Health Day 2022

Simon Bailey’s Blog – World Mental Health Day 2022

Monday 10th October

The theme of World Mental Health Day for 2022 is: ‘Make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority’. Just reading through this year’s title makes me feel like the task is too huge. In turning on the news or buying a newspaper it is not difficult to see how the anxiety of people can be raised just by listening to headlines. If I thought about tackling world mental health, then the task would seem impossible but, as always, we are reminded about our responsibility in changing the environment that we can affect. If, as individuals, we start to make a difference in our own areas of influence, we can hope that others are doing the very same in theirs.

Hope has been the keyword that I have used during other mental health awareness campaigns, and I can feel my anxiety levels rising by trying to come up with a different message. The fact remains that in the horse racing industry and the towns that we serve, hope really is what is needed. In talking about sport, we cannot ignore that the people who work in our industry are affected by health issues, the current energy crises, the rumours of war etc. As chaplains, we have the responsibility to hear peoples’ fears and to try to put some of these in perspective. In listening we are telling people that we care enough about their problems and want to walk with them through difficult times.

The great part is seeing what we do in partnership. Where we cannot help, then we know there are organisations who can. For practical help, Racing Welfare have seen initiatives like the financial grants for racing staff well used and much needed. These can be a great start to better mental health as they can ease the pressure of rising costs during the winter months.

Again, relationship is something I often talk about. Chaplaincy, in relationship with racing’s organisations offers a fuller support than just being a stand-alone service. Whatever the issues of an individual are, there is help available if staff need it. And so, the message for this year is again one of hope. My hope for the future was from a reading many years ago. In facing adversity, the words “Do not worry…” jumped off the page. It doesn’t need to be extensive counselling, though this could help some. It just needs to be the right words at the right time, no matter how simple and we can change perspective on our lives.

There is help available and it is my hope again this year that it will be used and appreciated more than ever.

In hope,

Simon

Young people getting the right start to their careers in racing thanks to £100,000 donation

Racing Welfare has received three-year funding for a Housing Support Officer to provide direct, professional support to young people starting their careers in racing.  The £100,000 donation comes from Dr Johnny Hon of Global Group Racing, who is keen to nurture talent within the racing industry.

This new donation will ensure this important role continues to be there for young people over the coming years. The Housing Support Officer has already proven to play a vital role in helping young tenants at Racing Welfare’s properties across the country to manage all aspects of their lives, in turn enabling them to flourish.

Donation to provide vital support to young people in Newmarket

Racing Welfare has received a pledged donation of £97,560, which will enable the charity to fund a Housing Support Officer for three years, providing direct support to young people starting out their careers in racing.

The donation comes courtesy of Dr Johnny Hon of Global Group Racing, and will come into effect from January 2022.

The role will be based at MacDonald Buchanan House, which provides safe, affordable housing in the heart of Newmarket’s racing community for young people aged 16-24.

Owned and managed by Racing Homes, Racing Welfare’s housing charity, MacDonald Buchanan House aims to bridge the gap between the racing schools and independent living, and a dedicated Housing Support Officer is integral to that. The supportive environment overseen by the Housing Support Officer gives these young people the best opportunity to flourish in both their personal and professional lives.

Racing staff box clever for Racing Welfare

A stellar cast of racing staff hailing from the north went toe-to-toe on 20 November at York racecourse for the William Hill Racing Staff Boxing night, providing a superb evening of entertainment with the aim of raising vital funds for organisers Racing Welfare.

Each competitor undertook eight weeks of intensive training delivered by Ultra White Collar Boxing, culminating in ten fiercely competitive fights with many competitors’ friends, family, employers and colleagues attending to show their support.

Racing Welfare Receives £150,000 Cash Boost Following Fitzdares Charity Raceday at Wincanton

Officials at Racing Welfare have been left overwhelmed after securing their biggest total from a single fundraising event after collecting more than £150,000 from a charity race day staged at Wincanton on Sunday 24th October.

The six-figure total was collected through a variety of methods including race sponsorship, hospitality packages, bucket collections, plus both a live and silent auction at the Somerset track’s Fitzdares Racing Welfare Charity Raceday.

Funds were also raised from a 12-runner charity race featuring stable staff including former Ipswich Town, Coventry City, Brentford and Reading midfielder Jay Tabb, who now works for Philip Hobbs.

The mile and a quarter contest was won by Sarah West and Celestial Force, who led home a one-two for champion trainer Paul Nicholls when getting the better of her colleague at the Ditcheat yard, Hannah Roche, and Wise Glory by a nose. You can watch the race back here.

More than £40,000 was raised from the silent auction which saw 82 lots up for grabs, including a five-night stay at a country house in South Africa. The live auction made £35,000, the top lot being a week at Umndeni Lodge, South African Riding Safari which made £14,000.
