Racing Welfare is a national charity supporting all those working and retired from the British horseracing and breeding industry. We are seeking an advisory committee member who shares our vision that everyone from the horseracing and breeding industry and community feels supported and has the opportunity to thrive. We are looking for someone who has a passion for the work that we do and who is familiar with the challenges of running a national organisation.
What will you be doing?
The Welfare Committee meet a maximum of twice a year, usually via video-call but occasionally in person. The meetings are currently routinely attended by six trustees, three committee members and the Chief Executive, Director of Welfare, Deputy Director of Welfare and Head of Programmes. The meetings are held to report on and discuss the performance of the welfare department in line with the strategy, consider any current issues or challenges facing this area of the charity, provide advice to the main board to help assist with high level decision making.
There will also be the requirement to undertake a committee member induction which we anticipate being a one-off one-day commitment. Each year, in addition to the two-committee meeting we anticipate another two days commitment would be required.
We invite committee members to join the Charity for three years with the option to re-apply every three years for a maximum of nine years.
What are we looking for?
We are seeking to add to the expertise that we have on the welfare committee, through an enthusiastic individual who has experience or knowledge of the voluntary sector and in at least one of the following areas:
Please note, as this post will involve governing and advising on services that have direct contact with young people and vulnerable adults alongside some work of a sensitive nature it will be subject to a satisfactory, enhanced DBS disclosure. We also make checks on staff working with vulnerable adults and young people against the DBS barred lists.

The Charity continues to review, improve and expand a large portfolio of welfare and wellbeing services which make a significant difference to the lives of individuals working in horseracing, their employers, the horse racing industry and in turn, communities and society. Racing Homes is a national charity providing affordable accommodation for those working in and retired from the British horseracing and breeding industry. We are seeking an advisory committee member who shares our vision that everyone from the horseracing and breeding industry has access to high quality, affordable, safe housing. We are looking for someone who has a passion for the work that we do and who is familiar with the challenges of running a national organisation.
What will you be doing?
The Housing Committee meet four times a year, usually via video-call but occasionally in person. The meetings are currently routinely attended by four trustees, one Committee Member, the Chief Executive, the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Welfare, the Head of Housing and the Head of Finance. The meetings are held to report on and discuss the performance of Racing Homes in line with the strategy, consider any current issues or challenges facing the charity, provide advice to the main board to help assist with high level decision making.
There will also be the requirement to undertake a committee member induction which we anticipate being a one-off one-day commitment. Each year, in addition to the four committee meetings we anticipate another two days commitment would be required.

What difference will you make?
Racing Homes currently has 165 units of accommodation housing young people, working age staff and retirees from the Racing industry. We have housing schemes in Newmarket, Lambourn, Middleham and Malton and have advanced plans for new schemes in two of those locations, providing more than thirty additional new units of accommodation. You will be part of this team, providing crucial advice to shape the housing provision and influence strategy.

It will consider any current issues or challenges facing this area of the charity, providing advice to the main board to help assist with high level decision making.

The meetings are held to report on and discuss the financial performance of the Racing Welfare group, including £16m of investments, in line with the strategy; review budgets, challenge management and provide recommendations to the main board; provide oversight of the statutory audit; and consider any current issues or challenges facing this area of the charity, provide advice to the main board to help assist with high level decision making.
There will also be the requirement to undertake a committee member induction which we anticipate being a one-off one-day commitment. Each year, in addition to the three committee meetings we anticipate another two days commitment would be required.
