I don’t know about you, but I often find understanding horses can be a lot simpler than understanding people.  Certainly, when I came into the racing industry it was because of my love of horses and my passion for racing, not because of my outstanding people skills.  However, from my very first job in the industry as a junior member of stable staff straight out of the racing school I knew I had joined a fantastic community.

This Saturday is World Mental Health Day, a day recognised on the 10th October every year not only by The World Health Organisation but also by many other people and organisations who are working to raise awareness of mental health issues.  This year’s theme set by the World Federation for Mental Health is ‘Mental Health for All’.

Episode 2 – The Breath Psych with Aodhagán Conlon

In the lead up to World Mental Health Day, which takes place on Saturday 10th October, we will be holding two Instagram live sessions with former national hunt jockey Aodhagán Conlon.  As well as now studying for a PhD in Sports and Exercise Psychology and working with the BHA and PJA as a performance consultant Aodhagán also has a new venture, The Breath Psych.   Using his research, Aodhagán has launched The Breath Psych on Instagram to provide viewers with breathing techniques that can enhance mental and physical wellbeing.

The Great Racing Welfare Auction Raises Over £53k!

The Great Racing Welfare Auction, that ran for four weeks and closed its bidding last night, has raised an incredible £53,195.  We auctioned off over 100 fantastic lots in the online auction with all the proceeds going straight to our Covid-19 Emergency Appeal.

“The generosity of both those who donated lots to our auction and those who placed bids has been truly astounding.  Given the incredibly difficult times we are all facing, to have received this level of support is testament to the wonderful spirit of the racing community.” said Dawn Goodfellow, Racing Welfare Chief Executive.

Jockeys’ Mental Health in Spotlight in New Short Film

The Fall, a powerful short film focusing on the mental health of jockeys is due to start filming in December.  The film has been written by Equine Productions’ Visual Director Nathan Horrocks, who will co-direct the feature with Cold Feet star Robert Bathurst. The film centres around how a jockey has to deal with the suffocating aftermath of a high-profile fall at a final fence.

Zero Suicide Alliance Launch New Awareness Training

Racing Welfare is proud to be a member of the Zero Suicide Alliance (ZSA).

To mark World Suicide Prevention Day today, Thursday 10th September, the ZSA has nationally rolled out a free online Step Up training module which focuses on supporting people who may be encountering mental health issues. Step 3, the ZSA Suicide Awareness Training module has been developed and released in time for World Suicide Prevention Day and is designed to give people the skills required to identify and reach out to someone whose mental health may be suffering.
