Mental Health Awareness Week gets the horseracing industry talking

Mental Health Foundation’s Mental Health Awareness Week: 09 – 16 May 2022

Stakeholders across the industry engaged in conversations around mental health and loneliness last week in support of the National Mental Health Awareness Week campaign, led by Racing Welfare on behalf of the horseracing industry.

Racecourses across the country showed their support with race titles dedicated to the cause and staff sporting the green ribbon on their clothing.

The campaign film, which can be viewed below, produced by Racing Welfare and Equine Productions, was also played at racecourses up and down the country as well as across social media channels of racing’s key stakeholders.

Jockeys’ Mental Health in Spotlight in New Short Film

The Fall, a powerful short film focusing on the mental health of jockeys is due to start filming in December.  The film has been written by Equine Productions’ Visual Director Nathan Horrocks, who will co-direct the feature with Cold Feet star Robert Bathurst. The film centres around how a jockey has to deal with the suffocating aftermath of a high-profile fall at a final fence.

Zero Suicide Alliance Launch New Awareness Training

Racing Welfare is proud to be a member of the Zero Suicide Alliance (ZSA).

To mark World Suicide Prevention Day today, Thursday 10th September, the ZSA has nationally rolled out a free online Step Up training module which focuses on supporting people who may be encountering mental health issues. Step 3, the ZSA Suicide Awareness Training module has been developed and released in time for World Suicide Prevention Day and is designed to give people the skills required to identify and reach out to someone whose mental health may be suffering. Racing Welfare launches 2020 Mental Health Awareness Week campaign

Racing Welfare has today outlined plans for its 2020 Mental Health Awareness Week campaign, beginning on Monday 18th May.  The week is a national initiative run by the Mental Health Foundation which runs through until Sunday 24th May.  Racing Welfare leads racing’s response to the campaign, which this year has been taken fully digital by the charity due to Covid-19.

Racing Welfare and GBR produce COVID-19 Wellbeing Toolkit

Racing Welfare and Great British Racing have come together to produce a Wellbeing Toolkit specifically designed to support the mental wellbeing of racing’s workforce during the Covid-19 outbreak.  The document contains useful links, tips and strategies for coping with the crisis, including contact details for Racing Welfare and other organisations who can help. Racing Welfare will announce the findings of its industry-wide mental health research at a launch event on Monday 13th May at Royal Windsor Racecourse, coinciding with the start of Mental Health Awareness Week.  The study, undertaken on the charity’s behalf by Liverpool John Moores University in association with The Racing Foundation, is expected to shape the structure of mental health support within racing going forwards.

New research identifies occupational stressors for racehorse trainers in Great Britain

Research presented at the Horseracing Industry Conference on behalf of Racing Welfare has found racehorse training to be an inherently stressful occupation, identifying a number of repetitive themes which have been found to impact on the health and wellbeing of trainers.
