New Directory shows the power of the racing industry to support its communities and transform lives

British racing launches first comprehensive Directory of community activity and education

A ground-breaking Directory has launched today highlighting British horseracing’s commitment to helping communities improve their health, wellbeing and education, including bringing them closer to horses. A ‘first of its kind for racing’, the development of this Directory of charitable and community activity is seen as an important contributor to the sport’s recovery plan and its engagement with the racing public and wider society.

Community United, West Berkshire’s leading ethnic communities advocate organisation, is holding a free online community forum on 16th September to launch the Belonging Project West Berkshire

Community United is a not-for-profit non-partisan community-based organisation supporting communities of diverse cultures, ethnicity and religion who live and work in West Berkshire.  Its purpose is to bring communities together, to work to eliminate discrimination, to promote positive relationships between different communities, and to advocate for equal opportunities for all in West Berkshire.

Zero Suicide Alliance Launch New Awareness Training

Racing Welfare is proud to be a member of the Zero Suicide Alliance (ZSA).

To mark World Suicide Prevention Day today, Thursday 10th September, the ZSA has nationally rolled out a free online Step Up training module which focuses on supporting people who may be encountering mental health issues. Step 3, the ZSA Suicide Awareness Training module has been developed and released in time for World Suicide Prevention Day and is designed to give people the skills required to identify and reach out to someone whose mental health may be suffering. Training launched to improve LGBT+ awareness and inclusion within British racing

To mark Pride month this June, the Diversity in Racing Steering Group’s (DiRSG) dedicated LGBT+ subgroup has launched a new e-learning module to improve LGBT+ awareness and inclusion within British racing.

The module is available at no cost via Racing2Learn here and is relevant to everyone involved in the industry, no matter what their role.

Jockey Club Racecourses to offer free racing for industry grooms

Thursday 6th February 2020 – Grooms from racing yards are being offered thousands of free tickets by Jockey Club Racecourses to go racing in their spare time, as part of a new initiative with the National Trainers Federation website, RacingGroom.com.

Tickets on offer will include selected days of The Festival™ presented by Magners, The Randox Health Grand National Festival and QIPCO Guineas Festival and many more across the UK.

Jockey Club Racecourses is encouraging racing grooms to bring a guest for free by making available a pair of tickets for all of the 19 selected fixtures.

 

#OneDayChangesLives: ACO shows nearly half a million turn to charities for support, including basic essentials

With January intensifying the difficulties people face financially and emotionally, new research has revealed nearly half a million people turned to charities for help in just one year, with Racing Welfare supporting more than 2,500 last year alone.

National data from the Association of Charitable Organisations (ACO) shows the number of people seeking help from charities and benevolent funds because they have nowhere else to turn following an unexpected change in circumstances has risen over the last four years.

Racing Welfare’s Director of Welfare named as finalist for Godolphin Award

Racing Welfare’s Director of Welfare, Simone Sear, has today been named as a finalist for this year’s Godolphin Rory MacDonald Award. The accolade is part of the Stud and Stable Staff Awards and is one of six categories, encompassing a total of £120,000 in prize money.

The Rory MacDonald Award recognises any individual connected directly or indirectly within horseracing, including auxiliary and administrative staff who has made an outstanding contribution to either the racehorses or to the lives of those working within the industry, or on racing’s behalf, in local communities showcasing the social responsibility of our sport, for either equine, humans or both.

Palace House Newmarket announces free entry for racing staff

Palace House, the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art yesterday announced that it will now be offering free entry to all current and retired racing and stud staff. Palace House launched the scheme 1st July to coincide with Racing Staff Week.

Awards season comes to Yorkshire as John Bottomley scoops Godolphin Dedication to Racing Award

John Bottomley, who celebrated his 60th year working in racing last year, returned to his home in Norton, North Yorkshire, a hero having won the Dedication to Racing Award at the Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards last week.

New research identifies occupational stressors for racehorse trainers in Great Britain

Research presented at the Horseracing Industry Conference on behalf of Racing Welfare has found racehorse training to be an inherently stressful occupation, identifying a number of repetitive themes which have been found to impact on the health and wellbeing of trainers.
