Lauren’s Story – Fundraising through COVID-19
Lauren Webb (pictured), yard manager to trainer Daniel Kubler, speaks with modesty and humility when asked about making the final three for a Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff award in the leadership category. Her dedication to her work and the staff in the yard, however, shines through.
This dedication led Lauren to fundraise for Racing Welfare having received support from the charity in the past. Feeling inspired by the breadth of services available to those in racing through Racing Welfare, Lauren raised a total of £101 in just over three weeks.
Can you tell us a little bit about the fundraising you have recently done for Racing Welfare?
I signed up to do the December accumulator challenge on Great Run which is the people who organise the Great South Run and the Great North Run but they have been doing online solo challenges for people who haven’t been able to race and I set myself the challenge of running 100 miles before Christmas between the 1st of December and the 25th of December.
What was the motivation behind choosing Racing Welfare as your nominated charity?
I’ve had a bit to do with Racing Welfare in the past and they have also helped out my friends and colleagues. I’ve done promotional videos for Racing Welfare so it felt like a good opportunity to give back after they have helped me with my rehabilitation from injury.
Can you tell us more about how Racing Welfare have helped you?
I dislocated my shoulder about three years ago and Racing Welfare funded my physiotherapy sessions at Oaksey House run by the Injured Jockeys Fund. Racing Welfare have also given me careers advice through CATS – their Careers Advice & Training Service – helping me to research how to improve my job role. I had never been head person before I landed this job and although Dan and Claire have been excellent in training me up, I thought it was a good idea to get some additional advice. It helped me to build connections and to network within the industry. Racing Welfare have also helped my friends out with things like counselling and housing. I attended an event at The Jockey Club Estates where Racing Welfare explained to trainers their plans for the future which helped to learn more about how much they actually do for the racing industry. I never realised how much they do for the retired community as well and I thought ‘that’s really nice supporting the racing staff who are no longer in racing but have been a servant to the industry’.
You’ve been nominated for a Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff award, congratulations! How does that feel?
It was a shock. Dan said he wanted to nominate me then all of a sudden I got a phone call to say I was shortlisted for the final ten and then a few weeks back I found out I was in the final three and I couldn’t believe it so I feel like a winner already!
