Hi my name is Karen Ladym and I am currently a Welfare Officer in the Newmarket team, which covers the East of England and the Midlands region. I have been fortunate enough to work for Racing Welfare since March 2006.
Since I was 16 years old I have worked in the racing industry, with my first job administering Bloodstock Insurance. I come from a racing family. My father was a stud manager and both grandfathers held an Apprentice Licence. My maternal grandfather, Charlie Leggett was Champion Stable Lad boxer for 7 consecutive years – we still have all the cups in the attic! He then went on to train Olympic gold medallist boxer Terence Spinks.
Born in Newmarket, I have lived there most of my life, until the last few years. However, I continue to commute each day to my workplace, purely because I have found my vocation in life and love my role as a Welfare Officer for Racing Welfare. I am naturally a people person and my job gives me the privilege of meeting the racing community, offering them advice, guidance and support or just a listening ear.
