Racing Welfare is proud to announce the launch of the 1% Club, a new fundraising initiative designed to unite consignors, breeders, and buyers in support of the charity’s vital work across the British horseracing and Thoroughbred breeding industry.
Through the scheme, consignors and breeders are invited to nominate one yearling from their draft at the upcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sales, pledging 1% of its sale price to Racing Welfare. The funds raised will directly support the charity’s wide range of services, which provide practical, emotional, and financial assistance to the people who dedicate their lives to racing.
Participating horses will be highlighted in sales catalogues, signalling to buyers and the wider industry their valuable contribution to the welfare of racing’s people.
Racing Welfare supported more than 2,000 individuals last year alone, providing over 12,000 instances of support, from mental health services and housing advice to financial guidance and critical incident response. With demand for its services continuing to grow, initiatives like the 1% Club are crucial in helping the charity continue to be there whenever and wherever racing’s people need help.
Andrew and Jane Black of Chasemore Farm were among the first to get behind the initiative, saying: “The team at Chasemore Farm have benefitted from the help and support provided by Racing Welfare in so many ways over the years. Participating in the 1% Club initiative is a great opportunity for us, in a small way, to reciprocate that support and show our appreciation for this amazing charity.”
They have chosen to nominate Lot 1827, a bay filly by Pinatubo out of Parsnip who will go under the hammer on Friday 17th October.
Newsells Park Stud are also supporting the 1% Club, with Lot 608 nominated on Monday 13th, while Hillwood Stud have nominated Lot 1599 on Thursday 16th.
Dawn Goodfellow, Chief Executive of Racing Welfare, said: “Racing Welfare exists to care for the people who care for racing. As a charity which receives no government funding, we need to raise £3m each year to provide our vital support services to the people who keep British horseracing and Thoroughbred breeding running – 24/7, 365 days a year. We can only do this thanks to the generosity of our donors and the 1% Club is a simple yet powerful way of enabling people to show their support. A small pledge from individuals can have a transformational impact when combined and we are hugely grateful to those who have already shown their support and signed up.”
