This book details the dangers jockeys face, the prospect of serious injury – or worse and is also a deep exploration of their other challenges; control of diet and the possibility of sudden enforced retirement.  It discusses the courage they need, the stamina, patience and total dedication, as well as their resolve and resilience.

This book is a labour of love for its author, Chris Haslam, a lifelong follower of jump racing.  Research, and many interviews with jockeys and trainers, has enabled him to experience what lies behind the scenes of jump racing, the ‘shadow side’ and to study its impact on jockey’s lives, and to chart their personal stories, which have not been fully documented, until now. The book describes the physical and psychological challenges facing the 21st century National Hunt jockey.
