Racecourse Doctor, Lee Humphreys to display behind-the-scenes imagery at The November Meeting in aid of Racing Welfare
October 2019 – Cheltenham Racecourse Doctor, Lee Humphreys will be displaying 48 of his own photographs taken across the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 seasons in the Hall of Fame throughout The November Meeting.
Lee Humphreys, a surgeon at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, has been looking after jockeys on racedays for over a decade. Over the course of last season, he undertook a project to capture images of those who work at Cheltenham Racecourse, both permanent and raceday staff. The unique images have been collated into an exhibition for racegoers to enjoy.
Lee’s photography exhibition will be hosted on all three days of The November Meeting, with donations towards Racing Welfare, who support those who work in the racing industry. The images offer a behind-the-scenes insight into the workings of the racecourse, and offer the chance for racegoers to take a look at never seen before images.
Lee commented,
“Over the last 14 seasons at Cheltenham I have had the pleasure of working with some fascinating people who go largely unnoticed by the public. I wanted to combine my love of photography and my ability to “access all areas” to tell the story of the small army that work behind the scenes to help make the racing at Cheltenham the best in the world. ”
None of these images are posed and nearly all have been taken whilst performing my medical duties, they are snapshots in time as seen from my perspective. I want to thank Racing Welfare and Cheltenham Racecourse for giving me the opportunity to indulge my passion, but I also want to thank the many people I have photographed as part of this project for providing me with such a wealth of material. Lee has produced a wonderful collection of photos which depict so many of the people who are involved in delivering racing at Cheltenham over the course of a season. Although focused on Cheltenham, the pictures mirror racecourse teams around the country, all of whom who work incredibly hard to bring racing to the public every year. The November Meeting is a three day race meeting that is Cheltenham Racecourse’s biggest race meeting this side of Christmas. The meeting kicks off with Countryside Day on Friday 15November with live music after racing from West Country legends, The Wurzels after racing. Saturday 16 November is featuring the BetVictor Cheltenham Gold Cup, followed by Family Fun Day on Sunday 17 November.
