Plunging into the Serpentine

This Saturday, Two Racing Welfare fundraisers will take the plunge into Hyde Park’s Serpentine lake for Swim Serpentine, the open water swimming festival with events for all abilities.

This inspirational event, created and organised by London Marathon Events, will take place in and around the beautiful Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park, the venue for the open water swimming competition at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Now in its third year, Swim Serpentine is already a must-do event in the open water swimming calendar and includes a range of distances for all levels of swimmers aged 12 and over, including ½ mile swims, one mile swims and the more challenging two mile swims.

Racing Welfare are thrilled to have two competitors taking on this challenge for Racing Welfare, Rachel Wilson and Zoe Elliot.

Zoe Elliot

Hi I am Zoe Elliott and I have been working in racing for 20 years, with all of that time spent on the administration side of racing.  I work at the British Horseracing Authority as the Head of Careers Marketing and Recruitment running careersinracing.com.  I work closely with the Racing Welfare team and see the amazing work that they do so I really wanted to do a tiny bit towards supporting them with some fundraising, as well as challenging myself at the same time.  I started a bit of open water swimming last year and did a couple of triathlons, but this 1 mile in the serpentine will be my longest open water distance to date, and I am pretty nervous about it.   I always think it never sounds that much compared to running distances – but its 64 lengths without the pool ends for a breather – so it’s tough enough for an average swimmer!  I find swimming a great way to destress from work, and open water swimming can be stunning on a nice day in a calm lake (I will pass on sea swimming for now….well there’s sharks and things out there!).  My fundraising is going ok – I have been using the motto of a ‘fiver would be fine’ so if you can spare a fiver for Racing Welfare do head over to my fundraising page https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/zoe-elliott12

Rachel Wilson

I’m going to swim a mile in the Serpentine in London in September to raise money for Racing Welfare, a charity that supports stud, stable and support staff who work in horse-racing. Racing Welfare provides supported housing for those who work in or have retired from jobs in racing, offers careers advice, community activities and a 24 hour helpline. If you are so minded I would be grateful for your donation. https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/RachelWilson27

Good luck to both of our swimmers!
