Racing Welfare awards grants to those who work or who have worked in the thoroughbred racing and breeding Industries, including their dependants. Grants are awarded:

• For the relief of poverty, sickness & injury,
• For the advancement of education & retraining,
• For the provision of goods & services that will aid health & wellbeing.

Racing Welfare makes grants to eligible individuals. All awards are discretionary and may be varied to meet exceptional circumstances.

Eligibility criteria

• Individuals must be able to demonstrate a substantial experience of paid work in the racing and thoroughbred breeding industry. This will require five years verifiable employment in the industry in a seven year period.
• Individuals with fewer than five years will be eligible if aged 16 to 24 years or if the application follows an accident at work.
• Individuals must not have been out of paid employment in the industry for more than five years, except where this follows injury, ill-health or retirement from paid work.
• All statutory entitlements and benefits must be claimed. All applicants will be asked to provide proof of benefits received and agree to apply for any further entitlements for which they may be eligible.
• Individuals or households must not have exceeded the maximum grant of £3,000 in total in any five year period.

*All grant applications will be subject to a needs based assessment and means testing.  Decisions may take up to a maximum of 6 weeks and are subject to prompt provision of financial information by the applicant to enable the assessment to be made.

Exclusions

• All those who have at any time been a licensed jockey, their partners and dependents must be referred to the Injured Jockeys Fund.
• Non UK residents.

Grants cannot be made for any of the following:

• Legal fees
• Anything that should be a statutory entitlement
• Animal welfare
• Reimbursement for services/goods that have already taken place or been paid for
• Business finance
• Funeral costs or body repatriation costs
• Care home fees or top-ups
• Private medical treatment
• Clearance of non-priority debts e.g. credit cards, hire purchase agreements (HP), unsecured bank loans, water rate bills, loans from family and friends
• Employment equipment
• Foreign worker repatriation costs
• Vehicle maintenance and/or repairs
• Remedial repairs to properties for tenants of private landlords.
