There are two parts to the scheme:

1. Weekly benefit
2. Capital benefit

Weekly benefit

Weekly benefit is paid for a maximum of 104 weeks from the date of accident. The amount of benefit received (maximum of £400 per week) is the difference between your pre-accident net wage and all statutory benefits received (e.g. Statutory Sick Pay). The scheme can also cover dental expenses, up to £5,000 arising from accidental injury.

“To be eligible to claim RIABS, you must be employed by a licensed trainer (either full or part time), and be on the stable register with the BHA. If you are self-employed, you are not eligible. You must also be aged between 16 and 65.”

RIABS claim forms must be submitted within three months of the date of the accident. You can get a claim form from your secretary or from the National Trainer’s Federation website.

There are two parts to the claim form:

A)     This part is to be completed by you and your trainer

B)     This part is to be completed by your GP

Capital Benefit

The purpose of this section is to provide a lump sum to any eligible person, or their legal representatives, following death or permanent disability as a result of an accident at work. This section also provides medical and repatriation expenses for an eligible person injured or taken ill whilst temporarily working overseas for their UK trainer. If you wish to claim a capital benefit, this must be done in writing. More information on RIABS can be found at the National Trainer’s Federation website.
