Last night, at a special event in York, the announcements were made of the much anticipated match ups for this Saturday’s William Hill Racing Staff Boxing Night.

The boxing night itself takes place at York Racecourse on Saturday 7th March and features a stellar cast hailing from the Yorkshire racing centres of Middleham and Malton.

Sponsored by William Hill, the boxing night will see 22 competitors from the racing industry pit their fighting prowess against each other, following eight weeks of intensive training delivered by Ultra White Collar Boxing.  The list of boxers includes racing grooms, stud staff, farriers, racecourse employees and jockeys, all of whom are raising money for Racing Welfare as part of their participation.

Liam McKee, Global Head of Media & Sponsorship at William Hill said ‘We are delighted to be supporting the fantastic work that Racing Welfare does within the industry by being involved in this great event at York Racecourse. We’re looking forward to seeing the hard work and commitment that everyone has put in to make it to the ring and I’m the sure the same grit and determination will stand them in good stead on Saturday night’.

The main event will feature a match up between amateur rider James John ‘The Durham Cowboy’ Waggott and Davie ‘Baby Bartley’ Gorman. Davie, a work rider for Micky Hammond, said he was taking part in the event not just for the fun but also

because Racing Welfare put me through physio when I had joint dysfunction, so I'd like to do a bit back.

The evening will also see an exciting match up between Maiti ‘Mayhem’ Stirling and Adele ‘The Blonde Bomber’ Mulrennan. Adele, a raceday presenter & ITV Racing Pundit says she got involved with the event

to try a new sport and to put a show on for everyone, all while helping raise vital funds for Racing Welfare.

Another standout match up on the night comes between Carl ‘Hitman’ Harwood, a work rider from Sue Smith Racing and Rory ‘The Relentless’ Bevin, Assistant Trainer to Tim Easterby. Speaking about his involvement in the event Rory said

Boxing has appealed to me for a long while, particularly when I used to play a lot of rugby but never managed to find myself in the right place at the right time. The training also seemed an excellent opportunity for a small distraction from racing while also raising money for Racing Welfare.
