RACING WELFARE CHARITY RACEDAY

Date: Friday 8th September 2023

Location: Haydock Park Racecourse

Please join us for a wonderful day of fundraising and racing.

Now in its nineteenth year, Racing Welfare’s charity lunch is enjoyed by over three hundred guests, who each enjoy a champagne reception, four course lunch, live and silent charity auctions, raffle and a great afternoon of racing in the Park Suite which boasts fabulous views of Haydock Park Racecourse.

Proceeds generated from the raceday are used by Racing Welfare, a registered charity, to provide a full range of support services to all of racing’s people. Our mission is to enhance the wellbeing of people from the horseracing and thoroughbred breeding community by providing enabling and proactive support throughout and after their working lives.

The day comprises of;

Bedmax Newmarket Heath Ride in aid of Racing Welfare

This year’s Bedmax Newmarket Heath Ride in aid of Racing Welfare will take place on Sunday 17th September.

The Newmarket Heath Ride is a sponsored ride which offers the chance for participants to ride over 8, 15 or 20 mile routes across Newmarket’s hallowed turf.  Starting and finishing at the July Course, the event is made possible by the support and kind permission of The National Stud, Newmarket Racecourses and Jockey Club Estates.

This ride gives you access to some of the best turf in Newmarket. Follow in Frankel’s hoofprints with a blast along the mile long Al Bahathri all weather gallop. Like last year, we have combined the ticket price and sponsorship into one fee, with no additional sponsorship money required unless you choose to fundraise. Richard Weller-Poley will be onsite to capture your memorable moments along the ride.

Bookings open on Monday 17th July. Spaces are limited so we recommend booking in early to avoid disappointment.

ARC Malton Open Day 2023

Malton Open Day returns for 2023 on Sunday, 10th September. The day will run in a slightly amended format, removing the need to queue for buses; this year, visitors should drive directly to the 11 yards, with car parking available at each location. For 2023, Racing Welfare has linked with York Racecourse to allow Malton Open Day attendees to see behind the scenes of a training yard before heading to York Racecourse in the afternoon to enjoy the YorkMix Family Sunday.

Meet York Class One scorer Great State at Richard Fahey’s Musely Bank or the ever-popular Highfield Princess at John Quinn’s Settrington-based yard. Along with getting up close to Malton’s superstars, you can understand what goes into training a racehorse by meeting the teams of staff that work behind the scenes to ensure Malton’s racehorses are the best looked after, happiest and most successful in the country. Combined tickets can be purchased from the Malton Open Day website to allow the opportunity to attend Malton Open Day throughout the morning and head off to York Racecourses’ YorkMix Family Sunday when yards close. Many of the horses trained in Malton will line up at York, and the day delivers the opportunity to follow the horses on their journey from their stables to the winning post.

Combined tickets for Malton Open Day and York Races are available to be purchased in advance of the event from the Malton Open Day website.

The 11 trainers opening their gates this year are:

  • Adrian Keatley
  • John Quinn
  • John Wainwright
  • Julie Camacho
  • Nigel Tinkler
  • Ollie Pears
  • Richard Fahey
  • Roger Fell
  • Sara Ender
  • Suzzanne France
  • Tim Easterby

The Great Racing Welfare Showdown – Cancelled

We are really disappointed to announce that The Great Racing Welfare Showdown planned for 17th June is being cancelled. In light of a recent incident at a similar boxing event, we need time to review the outcomes of the investigation.

We’d like to thank all those who signed up to take part and bought tickets. Events like these help us to raise vital funds so that we can be there for racing’s people when they need us and we hope that you will continue to support the charity by attending our other events across the year.

  • 17th June 2023
  • Newmarket’s Rowley Mile Racecourse

The Great Racing Welfare Showdown is an exclusive evening of open-air boxing in the Rowley Mile parade ring.  This flagship fundraising event will take place on Saturday 17th June at Newmarket’s famous racecourse and is organised by, and raises funds for, Racing Welfare.

The competition will see 22 fairly matched participants box three x two-minute bouts on the night. All participants must work in the horseracing industry and will include some celebrity bouts.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an accredited training course which teaches people how to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue. MHFA won’t teach you to be a therapist, but it will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis – and even potentially stop a crisis from happening.

This course is ideal for those who would like to become an MHFAider® to:

  • Gain the knowledge and skills to spot signs of people experiencing poor mental health
  • Be confident starting a conversation and signpost a person to appropriate support

Everyone who completes the course will receive:

  • An accredited MHFA certificate
  •  MHFA logo to add to your email signature
  • Access to Racing’s Support Line for support and advice
  • Posters for your workplace
  • Resources
  • Downloadable copy of the MHFA manual

The maximum number of people per course is 16. The course costs £88 per person (this course, usually £300, is subsidised by Racing Welfare).

Please note, this course is only available to people working in the British horseracing and Thoroughbred breeding industries.
