Young people getting the right start to their careers in racing thanks to £100,000 donation

Racing Welfare has received three-year funding for a Housing Support Officer to provide direct, professional support to young people starting their careers in racing.  The £100,000 donation comes from Dr Johnny Hon of Global Group Racing, who is keen to nurture talent within the racing industry.

This new donation will ensure this important role continues to be there for young people over the coming years. The Housing Support Officer has already proven to play a vital role in helping young tenants at Racing Welfare’s properties across the country to manage all aspects of their lives, in turn enabling them to flourish.

First Tenants Move Into Racing Welfare’s Newly Renovated MacDonald Buchanan House

Wednesday 8th April saw the first 12 tenants move into the newly renovated MacDonald Buchanan House, on Howard De Walden Way in Newmarket.  With the support of The Alborada Trust, The Macdonald Buchanan Charitable Trust and The Newmarket Open Weekend (now The Henry Cecil Open Weekend), Racing Welfare has invested over £600,000 into a complete renovation of the site which, when fully completed, will provide 18 units of high-quality accommodation.  The completion of the project has been slowed by the Covid-19 crisis, but the team involved have worked hard to adapt and are delighted to be able to welcome these young people into the Racing Homes Community.

 

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal opens Summerhill House in Newmarket

Summerhill House, Racing Welfare’s newest housing development, received a royal seal of approval today, Tuesday 12th November, when it was officially opened by the charity’s president Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal.

Situated in Howard de Walden Way in Newmarket, Summerhill House has been designed to house Racing Welfare’s most vulnerable retired beneficiaries, many of whom have dedicated all of their working lives to the racing and breeding industries.  Costing £3.5m to construct, the property contains 21 two bedroom flats and has been built in accordance with the Lifetime Home standard, which sets out to allow people to remain living in their own homes for longer.  The development is fully wheelchair accessible and features assistive technology and 24 hour call monitoring, alongside CCTV security surveillance.
