Ann and John’s Story – Trips and Outings

Each year Racing Welfare provides a group holiday for 50 retired racing staff, their partners and carers, providing them with the opportunity to enjoy new experiences, share memories and form new friendships.

For many years Ann Crone was a full-time carer to her late husband John and in 2019, together they attended our annual retired beneficiary holiday at Gunton Hall in Lowestoft.  Ann shares her experience below:

“Whilst I really wanted us to be part of the trip to Lowestoft, I couldn’t see myself and John being able to cope with the demands of going away. However, when the opportunity arose John convinced me that we should go.  He reassured me that we would be well catered for, based on previous experiences with Racing Welfare.”

“The whole process was easy and gave us both peace of mind.  Arrangements for transport, access to disability aids and accessible accommodation were all made.  From the point of pick up to drop off at the end of the holiday, nothing was too much trouble for the team who had experience in dealing with a wide range of needs.

Several trips were arranged throughout the holiday, one of which John decided not to take up.  I was, however, still able to go, leaving my husband in safe hands while I had some rare time for myself; a win-win for both of us.  Evening entertainment was provided and the catering was excellent throughout.

On the trip along the Norfolk Broads, the team took care of transporting John comfortably on and off the boat, giving me the freedom to enjoy the surroundings; something that I don’t always get.  Nothing was too much trouble and everyone we came into contact with, went above and beyond.

A huge thank you to everyone involved who provided us with a well-needed, fantastic break from normality.”
