Racing Welfare is the horseracing industry’s main occupational welfare charity. It provides support to people working in, or retired from, the industry who are in need through injury, infirmity or other reason. The Charity is entirely dependent on voluntary donations.
To help fund its £1.8m annual programme the Charity would like to place its fundraising activities from trusts (and high net worth individuals) on a more sustainable footing. The Charity has therefore created a new post of Trusts Fundraising Executive and seeks to employ an ambitious, innovative, self motivated and target driven individual.
The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge and experience of the background and process of UK voluntary sector funding; a proven track record of securing funding from charitable trusts and excellent research, analytical, communication and interpersonal skills.
Whilst a fundraising qualification is desirable the Charity is committed to investing in people and appropriate training will be given. Applicants should have access to a vehicle and be prepared to use it on the Charity’s business for which appropriate mileage will be paid. The role will be based at the Charity’s head office in Newmarket, Suffolk.

TRUSTS FUNDRAISING EXECUTIVE
(2 Year Contract)
The purpose of this post is to:
- establish firm foundations for sustainable fundraising from charitable trusts and high net worth individuals;
and specifically to:
- raise £250,000 over two years, principally from charitable trusts and high net worth individuals: and,
- develop and maintain long term relationships with charitable trusts and high net worth individuals.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities :
Charitable Trusts
- To regularly research and review the grant making criteria and patterns of giving by existing and potential charitable trust donors, to identify best prospects for generating income for Racing Welfare.
- To prioritise those charitable trusts to whom grant applications will be submitted.
- To create compelling and imaginative written proposals for funding for Racing Welfare’s work, and submitting grant applications to charitable trusts in accordance with their deadlines.
- To maintain accurate detailed records of research undertaken and approaches made to charitable trusts, including details of successful and failed funding applications.
- To develop effective relationships with key internal staff to ensure effective, timely and professional approaches and reporting.
- Take the lead on the compilation of timely, accurate and effective reports to donors, working with heads of department to produce these reports.
- To monitor and review budgets and income generated from charitable trusts.
High Net Worth Individuals
- To research and identify prospects with whom the Charity will aim to develop significant philanthropic relationships.
- To understand donors’ wishes and aspirations and to identify potential links with Racing Welfare’s own activities, with the aim of securing a major gift.
- To identify, recruit and work with high-level volunteers (including Racing Welfare Trustees) who can assist with prospect identification and solicitation.
- To implement solicitation strategies to secure private gift support.
- To work with high-level volunteers (including Racing Welfare Trustees) to ensure that the Charity is appropriately represented in meetings with donors (e.g. face to face meetings, in writing, by telephone, fundraising events, private lunches etc).
- To ensure that Racing Welfare’s representatives build effective relationships with key major donors and ensure the best possible donor experience is provided, thereby maximize their long term commitment to the Racing Welfare.
- To monitor and review budgets and income generated from high net worth individuals.
Corporate Donors
- To work with the Fundraising and Communications Executive to identify any corporate donors that may be receptive to applications for significant grant funding.
- To create compelling and imaginative proposals for funding from companies for the Charity’s work.
- To maintain accurate detailed records of grant applications made to companies, including details of successful and failed funding applications.
Other
- To develop good working relations with the Fundraising and Communications Executive so that information is readily shared on existing and potential supporters.
- Occasionally work out of normal office hours as required.
- Take on other tasks, duties or projects which may arise from time to time and which are commensurate with the general level of this post.
The Fundraising and Communications Executive is primarily responsible for managing relationships with companies, especially where companies are supporting fundraising events (e.g. through event sponsorship).
