The Cawley twins from Liverpool started their first job in racing with Joe Hartigan at Middleham in 1960, however after four months they were split up with Allen starting his apprenticeship with Harry Blackshaw and Arthur going to Avril Vasey.
Apprenticeships served Allen moved to F Johnson Houghton where he became Travelling the Head Lad, continuing to work there under Helen Johnson Houghton until his retirement in 2008. Arthur followed the same path geographically working for Major Hern’s for 14 years prior to moving to a Head lad’s role at GW Richard at Penrith. After a few years of training in his own right Arthur moved back to West Ilsley to Dick Hern and then Mick Channon until his retirement last year.
Allen’s top horse was the grand dam of Persian Punch, Orston and Arthur’s would be either of Mick Channon’s stable stars Silcas Gift or Wotherly.
