Milton Keynes Shopping Trip – 11 th December

The trip to Milton Keynes went ahead on the 11 th December, a big thank you to Karen Stanbridge the Welfare Administration Officer and Michelle Bruce our Student Social Worker for accompanying those who went.

Michelle has put pen to paper to fill us in on the day:
December’s visit to Milton Keynes proved to be an enjoyable occasion for all. After setting off from Newmarket at 9.30am we arrived safely just before lunch. The shopping centre offered over 230 stores under one roof which was great, especially considering the time of year that we were visiting. There were also lots of tempting cafes and restaurants for a bite to eat. The Christmas atmosphere could be felt inside the centre, with lots of lovely displays and because of the sheer size of the centre it didn’t feel too busy. With so many shops to explore I think everybody managed to shop themselves out. Karen, being the organised person that she is, arranged for everybody to meet at the end of the day before joining the coach to head back to Newmarket. Fortunately nobody was forgotten and after a sleepy ride home everybody thanked Karen and Michelle for a lovely day out.

Artheads Exhibition

11 th and 12 th January, Bury St Edmunds

Artsheads is an art exhibition which was initiated by SMIT (Substance Misuse Implementation Team) one of Racing Welfare’s partners in the Newmarket Racing Partnership. Anyone is welcome to contribute work to the exhibition, the theme of which is experiences around drugs and alcohol, ranging from inspiration from personal experience, to witnessing the effects of drugs and alcohol on others through to general perception of the topic. A number of us in the office had our arms bent by Joe to contribute (with various levels of competence) and we were all really impressed by the time and thought that Jim Burling put into his exhibit, which put us all to shame.

Jock’s Calender

Roy ‘Jock’ Urqhuart worked tirelessly throughout 2007 to fundraise and organise a calendar from start to finish. The calendar ‘Racing – A Working Way of Life’ features photographs from all aspects of racing life – the sales, the heath, at home in the yard and representing Racing Welfare, a great picture of Stella with Bruno her Suffolk Punch and her grandson Josh. Very kindly Jock has donated all proceeds to Racing Welfare and we would like to thank Jock for all his efforts and congratulate him on the calendar.

If anyone would like a calendar there are a few left for sale at the office.

Ray McGhin – Charity Race

A few people will have heard that we were considering a trip to Fakenham in February to support Ray McGhin riding in a charity race there. Unfortunately, the experience of the other riders meant that they were a little intimidated by Ray’s ability and experience, it was therefore decided, for everyone’s benefit, that Ray would not take part in that race. We are presently making arrangements for Ray to ride in a charity race at Newbury on 12 th June, which is Ray’s favourite track. Anyone who wishes to sponsor Ray should contact the Racing Welfare office on 01638 560763.
